The VIB Protein Core is a leading Biological Production facility offering end‑to‑end support for the development, production and characterization of high‑quality biologicals. Our activities cover microbial and mammalian expression platforms, upstream and downstream bioprocessing, and advanced biophysical and analytical characterization. We provide scalable production workflows – from small‑scale expression screens to 6–20 L microbial and mammalian cell cultures up to 12 L – delivering purified, well‑characterized biologicals ready for research or translational applications.

To accelerate development, the Core has established a suite of high‑throughput and matrix‑based optimization tools. FastScreen enables parallel expression testing across multiple hosts and conditions (E. coli, Pichia pastoris, HEK293F, CHO). For mammalian expression, we offer both transient production and generation of stable HEK293 or CHO cell lines. FastFold supports systematic refolding of inclusion bodies, while FastClean identifies optimal purification strategies to obtain high‑quality biologicals. When required, we provide customized conjugation services, including fluorescent labels, polymers and other functional modifications.

Quality is central to our mission. The Core integrates extensive biophysical and analytical capabilities, including SEC/MALS/UV/RI, mass photometry, dynamic light scattering and bio‑layer interferometry (Octet), ensuring detailed insight into purity, oligomeric state, folding, activity and binding interactions. Additional orthogonal analytics are performed in collaboration with specialized partners, enabling comprehensive quality assessment tailored to the application of the biological.

Beyond service provision, the Core actively invests in new technologies and emerging biomanufacturing approaches. Given the rising importance of next‑generation biologicals, we have built strong expertise in nanobody® VHH production, purification and characterization. Through continuous innovation and collaboration, the VIB Protein Core provides a robust and agile platform that supports the rapid development of biologicals for research, industry and future therapeutic applications.
